Summary
A talk on the engineering side of the work, given at a research institute built around exactly this kind of problem. How do you measure circadian rhythm in thousands of people going about their ordinary lives?
Dr Panda's answer was to build the instrument himself. His group developed an app and digital platform to capture daily patterns of sleep, activity and eating as they happen, and to relate those patterns to physiology measured by wearables including continuous glucose monitors. Deployed with scientists and clinicians around the world, the platform revealed circadian disruption to be far more common than anyone had estimated, with a large share of participants eating across fourteen hours or more without being aware of it, and then allowed interventions to be personalised to each participant's actual pattern, with measurable health improvements.
He is now extending this by integrating laboratory research with computational and AI methods and with sensor hardware. Relevant to anyone working in digital health or remote measurement.
