Rancho Mirage Writers Festival
Rancho Mirage Writers Festival, Part 2
with Dr Satchin Panda
Summary
The second part of the festival talk turns from explanation to application. What a reader can actually change about light, sleep and the hours in which they eat, and what to expect from those changes over weeks rather than days.
The centrepiece is time-restricted eating, and Dr Panda explains where it came from rather than presenting it as a rule. His laboratory found that the clock in the liver follows when animals eat rather than when their eyes see light, which made feeding a timing signal. Animals eating identical calories inside a consistent window were protected against disease that affected animals eating around the clock, and those foundational studies have since prompted more than 150 clinical trials in people. The practical form is straightforward. All food inside a consistent eight to ten hour window, and not longer than twelve.
He also addresses the objections that come up in any general audience. Shift work, family schedules, social meals, and what happens on the days the pattern breaks.
