Summary

An academic seminar at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, pitched at researchers rather than a general audience, on circadian control of metabolism.

The substance is Dr Panda's multi omics programme. To understand how the clock regulates physiology at a molecular level, his group has run whole genome time series studies of gene expression and function across more than sixty individual tissues, brain regions and the gut microbiome, spanning different species, ages and sexes. Those datasets identified the genes and pathways that produce daily rhythms in each organ, and made visible how much of metabolism is scheduled rather than continuous. They also surfaced a translational finding with real clinical implications, which is that the efficacy and adverse effect profile of hundreds of drugs in current use may depend on the hour of administration.

Work of this kind has drawn a wave of new researchers into the mechanistic links between circadian rhythm and human health. Recommended for anyone working in metabolic research.
