The Science of Time-Restricted Eating (Episode #80)
Dr Satchin Panda with Bret Scher
Summary
A clinician facing conversation, and the most evidence focused of these interviews. Bret Scher, a cardiologist, asks Dr Panda to walk through the research base for time-restricted eating in order. What the foundational animal studies actually established, what the human trials that followed have shown, and where the gaps still sit.
That sequence matters because the popular version of intermittent fasting has drifted some distance from the science. The original work showed that mice restricted to a consistent feeding window were protected against metabolic disease relative to mice eating the same calories across the whole day. Those studies prompted over 150 clinical trials around the world, with results that are encouraging on glucose control and cardiometabolic markers while being more mixed on weight than the marketing suggests.
There is also a practical thread on how to raise eating windows with patients without turning a simple, free habit into another source of anxiety or another rule to fail at. Recommended if you work with patients rather than just on yourself.
