Fasting, Autophagy and Cell Repair (EP 221)
Dr Satchin Panda with Simon Hill
Summary
A closer look at the half of the day that gets less attention, the fasting hours and the repair and clearance processes that run when the body is not occupied with digestion. Autophagy, DNA repair and the overnight turnover of damaged cellular components all sit on this side of the cycle, and all of them are scheduled rather than continuous.
Dr Panda is careful here about the line between animal and human evidence. Much of what is known about fasting and cellular repair comes from controlled work in mice, where feeding can be timed precisely. Translating it to people involves both measurement problems and a great deal of variation between individuals. His own group's time series studies across tissues show how differently each organ behaves through the fed and fasted phases, which is part of why simple claims about fasting rarely hold everywhere at once.
Simon Hill also presses on the more extravagant claims circulating online, and the conversation is useful partly as a corrective. Worth hearing if you want the mechanism without the overstatement.
