Summary

A conversation with CrossFit on training, timing and fuel, pitched at people who train hard and are used to thinking carefully about nutrition, but not necessarily about the hour at which any of it happens.

Two lines of Dr Panda's research bear directly on this. The first is his group's molecular atlas of exercise, which tracked how genes, proteins and metabolites shift across more than twenty organs in response to training and how exercise alters epigenetic marks in muscle, establishing that the response is whole body and time dependent. The second is more cautionary. Exercising with insufficient nutrition was found to compromise function across nearly every organ examined and to invert circadian clocks through most of the brain. For an athletic audience, that reframes under fuelling as a serious physiological insult rather than a matter of discipline.

Practical territory includes where to place training relative to the eating window, and what recovery requires in timing terms as well as in macronutrients.
