What I learned growing up in Odisha

I grew up in rural and semi-urban Odisha, in eastern India, where daily life followed the sun and the seasons.

Some flowers opened in the morning, others in the afternoon. Certain birds arrived at the same time every year. Frogs called in the evening. I did not have the word for it then, but I was watching biological time.

Those questions stayed with me through a degree in agriculture and into a life in science. Curiosity about small daily patterns can take you a long way.
